Characteristics And Selection Recommendations Of Different Gland Packings

They are usually made from gland packing yarn. Depending on the specific application environment and needs, the gland packing can also be reinforced with different materials, such as fiberglass, 304 stainless steel, and 316L, to meet sealing requirements under various conditions.

Here are the characteristics and selection recommendations for different types of gland packing:

① Asbestos gland packing is a widely used form of packing. It is quite inexpensive, has high temperature resistance, and the softness of asbestos contributes to the dominant position of packing made from this material. However, asbestos has low strength, is not as lubricating as graphite, and is more prone to wear. In addition, asbestos is a serious carcinogen and is prohibited in many countries. If you are using this type of packing, it is recommended that you use graphite packing (without steel wire).

② PTFE gland packing is divided into oil-containing and oil-free types. PTFE has good lubricity, stable chemical properties, acid and alkali resistance, and can withstand high temperatures of about 300 degrees. However, this type of packing has the characteristic of hardening at temperatures above 200 degrees. Although PTFE's lubrication is comparable to graphite, it still slightly wears the shaft due to its high strength. The packing is not suitable for installation (especially in large specifications) due to its high hardness and strength after weaving, but its wear resistance is better than that of graphite.

③ Ramie gland packing is a pump packing woven from ramie fiber lines, also known as high water-based packing. After being immersed in PTFE emulsion or temperature-resistant oil, its lubricity and softness are greatly improved. The advantage is that it becomes relatively soft after contact with water, and adding a rubber core increases its elasticity. The disadvantage is that it has greater friction than graphite and PTFE, and its lubricity is slightly inferior.

④ Animal oil gland packing and oil-impregnated cotton yarn gland packing are the lowest-priced options, but the cotton yarn becomes hard after contact with water. Currently, it is rarely used in large enterprises or those with higher requirements. Animal oil gland packing is generally made from hemp, and the grease is prone to corruption, while ordinary hemp is also subject to significant wear. Regarding the issue of packing oil content, a few words are added here: no matter how much oil is contained, it will always be lost with the water dripping from the cooling, causing the packing volume to decrease due to the rapid loss of a large amount of oil, necessitating re-tightening of the cover. Therefore, it is not the case that the more grease there is, the less wear occurs. On the contrary, the more grease, the more frequent maintenance becomes necessary.

⑤ Carbon fiber and aramid gland packing are both high-strength options. In theory, they can maintain a tight seal on the shaft for a long time, achieving good sealing effectiveness. However, due to their high strength and hardness, they can cause significant wear in high-speed rotating pumps. Especially with carbon fiber packing, it can be said to be the king of shaft grinding, so this material should not be used in high-speed rotating pumps with low pressure.

⑥ Graphite gland packing is a widely used dynamic seal packing. Its advantages include good lubrication and high temperature resistance (about 650 degrees), and the price of graphite materials has returned to a more affordable level. The disadvantage is that flake graphite can come off in large pieces when it rubs against the shaft, leading to relatively fast loss. Additionally, graphite wire can be divided into cotton yarn and steel wire. The steel wire graphite packing can cause significant wear on the shaft.
