Gland Packing Installation Guidelines

The effectiveness of sealing pumps and valves depends on the overall condition of each component.

It is crucial to ensure that the equipment requiring gland packing replacement is properly isolated according to the site and system.

Correct installation of gland packing is key to ensuring a reliable sealing effect. Here are some guidelines to follow when installing gland packing:

1. Selection of Gland Packing:

- Choose gland packing that meets the operating conditions required by the system.

- Calculate the cross-sectional area and number of required rings based on measurement records.

- Inspect the gland packing for defects and ensure the equipment and gland packing are clean before installation.

2. Gland Packing Installation Tools:

- Use special tools for gland packing installation.

- Tighten the gland nut with a tightener.

- Follow standard safety practices and regulations.

- Familiarize yourself with the required equipment before installation.

3. Cleaning and Inspection:

- Release all pressure in the gland packing assembly before cleaning.

- Check the shaft/stem and other parts for defects that could affect the gland packing.

- Replace any parts with significant defects.

- Use the old gland packing for failure analysis to determine the cause of early failure.

4. Measurement and Recording: - Record the necessary measurements for the shaft/rod and stuffing box.

- Measure the distance from the bottom of the stuffing box to the top for water seal rings.

5. Preparation of Gland Packing Rings:

- Wind the gland packing on a shaft or use a cutter for calibrated rings.

- Cut the gland packing into butt or miter joints as required.

- Ensure the ring fits the shaft or stem precisely according to manufacturer guidelines.

6. Installation of Gland Packing:

- Install gland packing rings one at a time, ensuring each ring is fully seated in the stuffing box.

- Stagger the rings at least 90 degrees apart, typically 120 degrees.

- Tighten the nut by hand and press down evenly, checking the distance between the gland packing and the top of the stuffing box.

Following these guidelines will help ensure a successful gland packing installation.
