Installation steps of gland packing

The effective sealing of pumps and valves depends on the overall condition of each component. Make sure that the equipment that needs to replace gland packing has been effectively isolated according to the site and system. Correct installation of gland packing is also the key to ensure the sealing effect.
1. Select gland packing. Ensure that the selected gland packing should meet the operating conditions required by the system and equipment; calculate the cross-sectional area of the gland packing and the number of required gland packing rings according to the measurement records; inspect the gland packing to ensure that it is free of defects; before installation, ensure that Equipment and gland packing clean.
2. Gland packing installation tools need to use gland packing special tools, and tighten the gland nut with a tightener. In addition, it is necessary to regularly use standard safety equipment and comply with relevant safety regulations. Before installing gland packing, you must first be familiar with the following equipment: cutting machine for verifying gland packing ring, verifying torque wrench or wrench, safety helmet, internal and external calipers, lubricant for fasteners, reflector, gland packing extractor, cutting gland Packing tools, vernier calipers, etc.
3. Clean and check. Slowly loosen the gland nuts of the stuffing box, release all residual pressure in the gland packing assembly, remove any old gland packing, thoroughly clean the stuffing box of the shaft/stem; check the shaft/stem for corrosion, dents, scratches Or excessive wear; check other parts for burrs, cracks, wear, they will reduce the life of gland packing; check the stuffing box for excessive clearance, and the degree of eccentricity of the shaft/rod; replace parts with larger defects; Check the old gland packing as a basis for failure analysis to find the reason for the early failure of the gland packing.
4. Measure and record. Record the diameter of the shaft/rod, stuffing box bore and depth, and when water seal rings, the distance from the bottom of the stuffing box to the top.
5. Preparation of gland packing ring. Braided gland packing Wind the gland packing on an appropriately sized shaft, or use a calibrated gland packing ring cutter; cleanly cut the gland packing into butt (square) or miter (30-45 degree) joints as required, one at a time ring and verify proper size with the shaft or stem. Molding the gland packing, making sure the ring is sized to fit the shaft or stem precisely, cutting the packing ring if necessary according to the gland packing manufacturer's operating guidelines or requirements.
6. Install gland packing. Carefully install gland packing rings one at a time, wrapping each ring around the shaft or stem, making sure the ring is fully seated in the stuffing box before installing the next ring, which should be staggered, at least 90 degrees apart, generally require 120 degrees. After the last ring is installed, tighten the nut by hand, and press down the gland evenly. If there is a water seal ring, check that the distance between the gland packing and the top of the stuffing box is correct. Also make sure that the shaft or stem can turn freely.
