Winter Solstice Customs

December 21, 2023 is the winter solstice in China. It is the 22nd of the 24 solar terms and one of the eight celestial solar terms. It is opposite to the summer solstice. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. The winter solstice usually falls on December 21 or 22 of the Western calendar.

Traditionally, the half-month period of the winter solstice is a festival with a strong festive atmosphere. It is also the festival with the richest and most different festival customs, and the most enduring. There are various ways to celebrate, including but not limited to sacrifices (to heaven, earth, gods, ancestors), gifts (congratulations, sending cold clothes), food, literature and art (numbering nine), etc.
